As Facebook keeps pushing the limits of privacy erosion, elected officials are starting to notice. Four Democratic U.S. senators unveiled a letter to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. (Full Article on Politico.com) I believe this is the first sally in what will eventually lead to regulation if no satisfaction can be achieved voluntarily.
So will Facebook give people the privacy they seek, or will legislation be
required? I am guessing Facebook, with their capital value going through the roof, will probably choose the “caveat emptor” approach and try to buy their way through lobbying in DC. On the good side, this will leave more room for an enterprising better mousetrap. Some company that we haven’t yet heard of who will base their success on doing what Facebook is refusing to do.
And for anyone who thinks that Facebook is too big to be dethroned, history indicates that there’s no such thing.
